Our company was founded in the fall of 1997 in Hamilton Ontario by Steve and Kathy Fenton. We began as a fluid power distributor; stocking and selling quick-connect couplings, pneumatic valves, pneumatic cylinders and turnkey automatic control systems. Within the first month, we took delivery of a CNC lathe and began to design and produce our own products including pneumatic couplings and ISO cylinders.
A leading monthly fluid power magazine with circulation of 50,000 copies had informed the industry that they wanted submissions of close-up artistic quick connect photographs. The chosen picture was to be used as the front cover in their July 2002 issue. We were aware of three large coupling manufacturers investing significantly towards winning this coveted and free marketing spot. With a simple 2 mega pixel camera we took several creative pictures and submitted them to the publication editors. Penton Publishing's Hydraulics & Pneumatics chose our picture and the magazine was printed and distributed worldwide with our product prominently displayed on the front cover. At the time we only had a staff of four people and the publicity gained us credibility at a critical time in our firm's early development.
We designed a pneumatic quick-connect coupling for general plant use that fit six of the most popular plug interchanges used around the world. This was a first for the international market and we were proud when we learned that a large manufacturing competitor tried to copy our coupling. They were not successful. In 2003 we secured a large contract to name brand this product for a competitor. In order to fill this order we needed to expand our production capability and we moved to our present location in Cayuga. Battlefield International Inc. purchased our building, secured twelve well used single spindle screw machines, as well as new tooling and the equipment required to shift from being a distributor that manufactured a limited product group to becoming a full scale manufacturer.
Since 2001, Battlefield International Inc. has been supplying AAI's Shadow UAV program with fuel system quick connects used on board the aircraft as well as integrated into ground station fuelers. Through investigative prototyping, we developed several new products that solved technical issues experienced by the AAI/Honeywell T-Hawk UAV program. We became known as a firm that could conceptualize and experimentally develop structural, mechanical and fluid systems within incredibly short timelines. Our design efforts were tested and evaluated by our customers at various locations throughout the world. Many of our initial concepts have advanced from the prototyping stage to becoming fully developed critical aircraft components that are in full production now. Our firm's relationship with AAI Corp was the catalyst that stretched us to continually increase our technical capability.
In November of 2004 we obtained our "Controlled Goods Certificate"; allowing us to share information, drawings, design concepts, and product samples within the confines of the United States' ITAR System.
The Canadian government has a program called Scientific Research and Experimental Development. The intention of this program is to provide significant tax credits to assist companies to develop new technology ensuring a strong future for Canadian manufacturers. We became very involved in this program and can credit our SR and ED program with dramatically increasing our value to the Aerospace industry.
In the fall and early winter of 2006, we purchased some new machines and equipment. We obtained a CNC milling center, a new CNC lathe with bar feeder, a microscope measurement system and some technically advanced manufacturing and measurement software. Besides the capital equipment, Battlefield through the SR and ED program invested over $250,000.00 in new product development from February 1st 2006 to January 31st 2007.
Strategic staffing additions throughout our history have greatly increased our capabilities in the areas of Product Development and Prototyping, Quality Systems Management, Product Failure Analysis, and Order Management & Production. Most of our staff base resides within a 3 - 30 minute commute to work, and we pride ourselves in utilizing the local talent pool to fill any available positions.
In 2007, after four years with the SR and ED program, we shifted our corporate focus away from standard industrial product manufacturing. We now spend more than 65% of our employees' time (overall) and more than 80% corporate focus on testing and experimenting to uncover emerging high technology especially in areas involving fuel systems and aircraft mechanical components.
In 2008 we introduced a comprehensively developed and tested fuel coupler solution to the Unmanned Air Vehicle Fuel Systems market; our EnduroLink™ Quick Connect Fuel Coupling System. This innovative scalable and robust design is now the standard fuel coupling within the unmanned air vehicle fuel systems worldwide. Since its introduction the EnduroLink™ has become single sourced on the AAI Textron Shadow, Aerosonde, Northrup Grumman Bat, Arcturus T-20, BAE Systems Silver Fox and the Lockheed Martin Fury.
During the 2010 fiscal year we invested over 1 million dollars into our facility, acquiring several new CNC machines and enhancing our building and property.
Since 2007 we have had a Quality Management System based on ISO 9001 in place. In 2011 we made the decision to upgrade our un-audited Quality System to ISO9001:2008 + AS9100C. We achieved our registration in August of 2011.
In January 2013, we purchased a 5 axis milling center, a Y-axis lathe with live tooling; two ISV certified computer systems, and Esprit CAM software.
In February 2013, we chose to discontinue producing our standard industrial product groups including our pneumatic quick connect coupling, ISO 6431 cylinder, self-store air hose and air blow gun product groups. This difficult decision was made to enable us to completely focus on the Aerospace market and to free up the required machine time to develop a brand new product for the aerospace and general industry. we are introducing a game changing dripless quick connect fluid coupling in several sizes from 1/8" to 3/4" nominal flow diameters. The product release will include the world's smallest dripless, flush-face design.
